We're not quite sure how this whole Duck Dynasty thing became a national sensation, but nonetheless, patriarch Phil Robertson's recent statements regarding gays and African-Americans have stirred up a firestorm of controversy. It's interesting (and frustrating) to see how many people, some of whom are in elected positions, have decided to make this a free speech issue. Simply put, while the First Amendment does prevent the Government from restricting your freedom of speech, it does nothing to prevent a private employer from protecting themselves if you make public statements that are counter to their public image (we touched on this in our Facebook series). Pseudo celebrity or not, be mindful of your employer's policies before you speak your piece in a public forum.
